Dr. Mary L. Brandt is a Professor of Surgery, Pediatrics, and Medical Ethics at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, as well as a pediatric surgeon at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas. She started a blog, wellnessrounds , in Dr. Brandt’s words, for 3 reasons: ” 1)… to share information about how to really succeed in medical school and residency 2)…to publish a ‘tool kit’ of specific ways to incorporate exercise, better nutrition, stress reduction, and other wellness habits into busy schedules and 3)…to have a way to talk about the joy of practicing medicine.”
She also is active on Twitter, and tweets about various conversations and topics discussed in the surgeon’s lounge. Dr. Brandt encourages guest posts on her blog, especially from medical students and residents. She also encourages students, residents, and physicians to contact her as well.
Dr. Brandt’s dedication to medicine showed with being part of the ride out crew and performing surgeries during the recent Hurricane Harvey, which caused devastating flooding in the region. She tweeted and blogged about her medical team’s experiences in caring for patients and the community in real time. She also provided helpful local Houston charities to donate to, and was readily accessible for anyone willing to help, as well as receiving suggestions for improving the health of her community.
For Dr. Brandt’s extraordinary and inspirational dedication to her students, residents, patients and community, as well as using her creative uses of blogging and Twitter, we recognize her as our Medical Influencer of the Week.
