Dr. Nii-Daako Darko is a trauma sugeon who grew up in New York City and is now based in Altoona, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.. After going through a rigorous medical education, Dr. Darko achieved many degrees, credentials, and certifications, yet came to the realization that his reality in medicine was not what he expected:
“As a doctor, not only was I not in complete control over my life, but I also hadn’t explored other talents I knew I had. I was in a box.”
This all changed during the year Dr. Darko did a year of locums work. He encountered many physicians who were working outside the traditional “box” of medicine: medical humanitarians working in war torn regions of the world, physician entrepeneurs running their own businesses, and some on TV. He observed how happy and passionate they were about what they do, as well as making an impact on society and providing great value. This led Dr. Darko to a tranformational insight:
“If I had known some of these stories or met these people during my climb up the ladder, maybe I would have done things a bit differently. So I pulled my talents off the backburner and created the Docs Outside the Box podcast.”
Dr. Darko describes the Docs Outside the Box podcast:
“Docs Outside the Box podcast bring stories of ordinary doctors doing extraordinary things to inspire other docs to think outside the box. My guests are living proof that doctors can break free from the exam room.”
In interviewing his guests and getting to know doctors “outside the box”, Dr. Darko is spreading the word to his listeners about a new movement in traditional medicine and a call to action:
“Folks! There’s a revolution brewing. My guests have broken the typecast of doctors as just doctors. From media moguls to activists to trendsetters, Docs Outside the Box podcast is bringing the movement to you LIVE and DIRECT!”
Dr. Darko is a physician who practices what he preaches in being a “doc outside the box”. In addition to his podcast, he is active on social media, and the internet. Dr. Darko’s highly creative use of digital communication platforms has allowed him to promote an inspirational message of finding passion in medicine through non-traditional paths. It is clearly having an impact on the medical community, as well as providing significant value to the world. For this, we honor Dr. Nii-Daako Darko as our Medical Influencer of the Week.
